Arvidson Leads Men's Golf At Pepperdine Intercollegiate

Oct. 10, 2000

SOMIS, Calif. - - Anthony Arvidson fired a three-round total of 226 to lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a 10th place finish at the Pepperdine Intercollegiate on Tuesday at the par 72 Saticoy Country Club.

Arvidson shot a final round 74 to follow up his 73-79 in the first two rounds. The senior has finished in the top 25 in all three events in which he has competed this year.

The Beavers carded a total of 909, including a 307 for Tuesday's round.

With the exception of Arvidson, none of the OSU golfers at this tournament had played in more than two tournaments before the Pepperdine Intercollegiate.

'Unfortunately, we didn't play as well as we had hoped to,' OSU head coach Mike Ketcham said. 'It's probably a good time to end the fall season. We have some work to do, but that's a good thing. We've had four new players in the lineup this fall, and we'll have a chance to concentrate on the fundamentals over the next two or three months before the spring season begins.'

Rounding out the scoring for the Beavers were Sean Deacon and Cameron MacKenzie, who each posted scores of 227. Deacon carded a low of 74 in the final round, and MacKenzie shot a low of 73 in the opening round. Deacon and MacKenzie tied for 25th.

Michael Jurgensen placed 47th with his 231, and David Yarnes tied for 51st with a 235.

'We still have a great shot at making the Regionals,' Ketcham said. 'We'll be better in the spring than we were in the fall. These players work hard, and (assistant coach) Brian (Watts) and I will work with them on fundamentals.'New Mexico claimed the team title by posting an 879, edging out San Diego State by nine shots.

Rob Kortan completed the sweep for New Mexico when he took home the individual medal honors with his 216. San Diego State's Lars Johansson, New Mexico's Wil Collins, and John Mallinger of Long Beach State took second, shooting 217.

The Pepperdine Intercollegiate was the last tournament of the fall season for Oregon State, the Beavers will resume competition when they head to Tucson, Ariz., for the Ping Intercollegiate Jan. 29-30.
