Oct. 10, 2000

OXNARD, Calif. -- Oregon's men's golf team shot the third-lowest round of the day and jumped three places in the final standings Tuesday at the Pepperdine Intercollegiate played at the 6,858-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club.

The Ducks entered Tuesday's final round in eighth, but shot a 10-over par 298 to pass Pepperdine, UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara. No. 14 New Mexico, tied for first after two rounds, also shot a final round 298 to win the tournament by 11 strokes over San Diego State. Long Beach State and Purdue tied for third 13 strokes back, while the Ducks finished 17 shots off the pace. Oregon finished six strokes better than sixth-place Pepperdine, the team that clipped the Ducks for the title at last week's Husky Invitational. Oregon State was 10th, 30 strokes back of New Mexico.

Juniors Aaron Byers and Brandon Harnden were Oregon's top individual finishers, tying for 13th at 7-over par. Harnden had one of the day's biggest improvements, shooting an even-par 72 to climb 19 places in the final standings. It was the second top 15 finish in three tournaments this fall for both golfers.

Sophomore Chris Carnahan also jumped 19 places on the final day, shooting a one-over 73 to tie for 20th overall at plus-10. It was the third straight top 20 finish for Carnahan. Sophomore John Ellis finished the tournament tied for 25th at 11-over.

The Ducks will compete in their final tournament of the fall Nov. 6-7 at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate at Tucson, Ariz.
