No. 21 Stanford Volleyball Sweeps California 3-0

Making her 2000 collegiate debut, sophomore Logan Tom tallied a match-high 17 kills to lead the 21st-ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 3-0 victory over California. Game scores were 15-6, 15-8, 15-8.

Tom decided to play her sophomore season at Stanford just prior to the start of tonight's match with California. The outside hitter is coming off a successful run at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games where the U.S. women's volleyball team finished fourth.

Stanford improves to 10-6 overall, 5-4 in conference action, while the Golden Bears fall to 8-7, 4-5 in the Pac-10.

The Cardinal had another stellar match at the net notching a 13 total blocks while hitting .336 for the match, its second-highest attack percentage this season.

Stanford took command early in game one, taking a 12-3 lead behind the solid play of middle blockers Jennifer Detmer and Sara McGee. Cal hit -.033 for the game as the Cardinal won 15-4 on a block solo by Detmer.

Game two was a battle between the two teams with the game staying close. The Golden Bears pulled within two at 7-9 but Stanford went on a four point run to get to 13-7. Once again, senior Jennifer Detmer would close the door on Cal, 15-8, with a kill.

The Cardinal opened game three with four straight points but California answered back to tie the game at 4-4. Another quick run by Stanford was matched by the Golden Bears and the game knotted at 8-8. The Cardinal then took control of the game scoring the final seven points of the game to win 15-8.

The offense was evenly distributed on the Cardinal side of the net with four players in double figures in kills. Ashley Ivy notched 14 kills followed by Sara McGee and Tara Conrad who had 10 kills each. Senior setter Lindsay Kagawa tallied five kills, 48 assists as well as two service aces. Detmer led the match with seven blocks on the evening.

California was led by outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy's 12 kills and Alicia Perry's 10 kills. The Golden Bears hit just .117 on the evening.

Stanford hosts No. 18 Long Beach State this Saturday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion.
