PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UCLA senior midfielder Shaun Tsakiris has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Aug. 29-Sept. 5.

Tsakiris, from Saratoga, Calif., scored two goals and two assists to lead the Bruins to a pair of victories last week at the IU Classic in Bloomington, Ind. Tsakiris recorded two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist in UCLA's 5-0 win over Butler on Sept. 1. He also assisted on the game-winning goal against No. 1 Indiana in the Bruins' 2-1 upset victory on Sept. 2. Tsakiris was named to All-Tournament Team for his efforts.

Tsakiris' Pac-10 Player of the Week honor is the Conference's first such honor for men's soccer all-time.

TEAM NOTES

CALIFORNIA: The Bears opened the season with a 4-0 shutout victory against UC Santa Cruz last week at Edwards Stadium. Senior F Kendall Simmonds scored Cal's first and fourth goals and leads all active Bears with 15 career goals and 46 points. The Bears travel to St. Louis, Mo., this week where they will battle the Billikens (9th NSCAA/15th Soccer America) on Sept. 8 and Louisville on Sept 10.

OREGON STATE: The Beavers outlasted Tulsa 2-1 and blanked Oral Roberts 3-0 to open the season with a pair of wins last week. Freshman F Jesse Servin posted two goals on the weekend to pace the squad. Oregon State faces Illinois-Chicago and Sacramento State this week as it hosts the Oregon State/Diadora Soccer Classic at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.

STANFORD: Stanford outscored its first two opponents of the season 11-0 last week, defeating Xavier 5-0 and Western Kentucky 6-0 to capture the Nike Goal Rush Championship, hosted by Fresno State. Senior F Corey Woolfolk scored two of the Cardinal's 11 goals, one in each game, and tallied one assist. Woolfolk garnered Tournament Offensive MVP honors. The Cardinal are idle this week.

UCLA: Top-ranked UCLA defeated Butler 5-0 and upset then-No. 1 Indiana 2-1 last week at the IU Classic in Bloomington, Ind. Senior MF Shaun Tsakiris, this week's Pac-10 Player of the Week, totaled six points in the two wins. He scored the game-winner in the victory over Butler and added another goal and an assist. Against the Hoosiers, he assisted on the game-winner. The Bruins take on San Diego State Sept. 6 in their home opener.

WASHINGTON: The Huskies began the regular season with a pair of losses, falling to Creighton 2-0 and Southwest Missouri State 3-0 in the Diadora Challenge at Tranquility Field in Omaha Nebraska. Washington outshot its two opponents a combined 36-18, led by junior captain Ben Somoza, who totaled 5 shots. The Huskies will look to rebound at the Portland Invitational this week, where they will face San Diego State on Sept. 9 and Akron on Sept. 10.
