PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UCLA senior forward McKinely Tennyson Jr. has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 5-11, marking the second week in a row a UCLA player has been honored for that award.

Tennyson Jr., from Indianapolis, Ind., recorded his first career hat trick en route to a 5-0 win over San Diego State on Sept. 6. Tennyson Jr., a Hermann Trophy nominee, currently leads the Bruins with four goals this season.

This is the first weekly honor for Tennyson Jr., and UCLA's second Player of the Week honor all-time.

TEAM NOTES

CALIFORNIA: Cal dropped its first games of the season last weekend in the St. Louis Tournament. No. 9 St. Louis held the Bears to just one shot in a 3-0 loss. In its second game, Cal was able to muster a little more firepower against Louisville with seven shots in another 3-0 defeat. Senior forward Kendall Simmonds led California over the weekend with four shots on goal. This week, the Bears will travel to CS Northridge on Friday, Sept. 15 and then host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 17.

OREGON STATE: The Beavers hosted the Diadora Soccer Classic and dropped their first contest of the year to Illinois-Chicago 1-0. Oregon State was able to bounce back and post a victory as the Beavers defeated Sacramento State 3-0. In the victory, Oregon State received goals from freshman fullback Ross Duncan, sophomore midfielder Aaron McHardy and freshman team-captain Josh Elbaum. Peter Billmeyer, another freshman, continued to play well at goal as he lowered hisgoals-against average to 0.67. This weekend, the Beavers will travel to Seattle, Wash., to play in the Nike Northwest Soccer Challenge where they will take on Santa Clara and UC Irvine.

STANFORD: The Cardinal were idle last week. Stanford will play host to its Bay Area rival, the University of San Francisco, on Tuesday, Sept. 12, before heading out to the Kappa-Hypertherm Dartmouth Men's Soccer Classic in Hanover, Mass.. The Cardinal will look to continue their offensive surge, as they outscored their opponents 11-0 in the Nike Goal Rush Classic back on Sept. 1 and 3.

UCLA: The top-ranked Bruins remained undefeated over the week as UCLA beat San Diego State 5-0 at Drake Stadium. McKinley Tennyson Jr. posted his first three-goal game as a Bruin with each one coming in the first half. In addition to Tennyson's hat trick, UCLA received goals from freshman defensemen Leonard Griffin, his first as a Bruin, and sophomore forward Tim Pierce. UCLA also got a three-assist game from freshman forward Adolfo Gregorio, who was the first Bruin to accomplish that feat since Seth George assisted three times in a 1997 match. UCLA will return to action Sunday, Sept. 17, at Frank Marshall Field at Drake Stadium against the University of San Francisco.

WASHINGTON: The Huskies won the Adidas/Portland Invitational for the fifth time in 10 appearances last weekend, having also claimed tournament titles in 1990, '92, '96, and '98. Washington posted its first two victories of the season behind the play of junior defender Bryn Ritchie, who was named Outstanding Defensive Player of the tournament. In the 3-0 win over San Diego State, Ritchie was credited with one shot as the Huskies peppered the Aztecs for 30 shots, 17 on goal. Against Akron, Ritchie completed the 3-0 win he headed in a cornerkick from teammate Kai Carroll. The Huskies will try and continue to prolong their winning streak as they host the Nike Northwest Soccer Challenge. There, Washington will play UC Irvine and Santa Clara.
