Scotty Scott Prevails In Singles and Doubles Of ITA All-American Qualifying

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Stanford senior Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood HS) posted easy qualifying wins in both singles and doubles on Tuesday morning to move one victory away from qualifying for both main draws of the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Scott, who is seeded 10th in the 64-player singles qualifying draw, opened the day with an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Magnus Kullenberg of Arkansas. Scott, who was ranked 79th in the ITA's Preseason Rankings, can advance to the main draw of the All-American Singles Championships with a win over Bay Area rival Robert Kowalczyk of California on Wednesday at 6:00 a.m. (Pacific Time). Kowalczyk advanced to the second round of qualifying with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Clemson's Darren Knight.

Scott then teamed with fellow senior Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS) to upset 47th-ranked Eru Lyndon and Matt Prentice of Oklahoma State 8-4 in a first round qualifying match. Scott and Ansari face 46th-ranked and fifth-seeded Georges Matijasevic and Tiago Ruffoni of Auburn on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. for the right to advance to the main draw. Matijasevic and Ruffoni moved on to Wednesday with a 8-2 victory over Jason Smit and Brett Steven (school unavailable).

Ansari also competed in singles on Tuesday, but was eliminated in the first round of qualifying by 63rd-ranked and second-seeded Marko Cerenko of Duke 6-3, 6-3. Cerenko will next face Stephen Van Westenbuyzen (school unavailable), who defeated Jorge Haro (school unavailable) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Action in the singles and doubles main draws of the 2000 ITA All-American Championships - the second leg of the ITA Grand Slam - runs from Thursday-Sunday in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Cardinal junior K.J. Hippensteel (Roanoke, VA/International Academy), who is ranked fifth in the country, will defend the ITA All-American singles titles he won last year in Austin, Texas, while 74th-ranked Stanford sophomore David Martin (Key Biscayne, FL/Boca Raton Prep) is also entered in singles play. Hippensteel and Martin will also team up in the doubles main draw.
