1999 Pac-10 Men's Cross Country Year In Review

The ARIZONA Wildcats placed six of the top 14 finishers, ending STANFORD's quest for a fourth consecutive Pac-10 title, with a convincing 27-point margin of victory at the 31st annual Pac-10 Championships at El Dorado Regional Park in Long Beach, Calif. Arizona was led by Micheil Jones (2nd), David Lopez (5th), Steve Smith (8th), Brent Pedersen (10th), Tom Prindiville (11th), and Mike Cramer (14th).

Steve Fein of OREGON claimed individual honors finishing first by eleven seconds with a time of 23:37, the Ducks' third Pac-10 individual title in the 90s.

Stanford and Oregon registered the top performances among Pac-10 squads at theNCAA Championships in Bloomington, Indiana. The Cardinal finished fourth, while the Ducks placed sixth, Arizona 10th, and ARIZONA STATE 14th.

Fein also was the Pac-10's highest finisher at the NCAA Championships with a third place finish. Five other Pac-10 runners finished in the top-20.

For his efforts during the 1999 season, Fein was honored as the Pac-10 Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Oregon freshman Jason Hartmann, who finished 15th at Pac-10s and 37th at the NCAAs was named the inaugural Newcomer of the Year.

Arizona's Dave Murray was tabbed by his peers as the 1999 Pac-10 Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. It was his seventh such honor, coinciding with the team's seventh Conference title. The Wildcats 10th place finish at the NCAAs was their highest placing since a third-place finish in 1994.
