1999 Women's Cross Country Year In Review

December 1999

STANFORD won its fourth consecutive Pac-10 title and its sixth Championship in the last seven years as the Cardinal placed the top three finishers, as well as five of the top-14, en route to a 32-62 margin of victory over ARIZONA STATE. The Cardinal one through three finishers included Fr. Erin Sullivan, Sr., Sally Glynn, and Fr. Lauren Fleshman.

At the NCAA Championships, Stanford finished third, behind Brigham Young and Arkansas. Three Cardinal runners represented the Pac-10 among the top-20 finshers at the NCAA Championships (No. 5. Lauren Fleshman, STAN, No. 7 Erin Sullivan, STAN, and No. 14 Julia Stamps, STAN).

STANFORD freshman Erin Sullivan won her first career Pac-10 title and became only the second freshman to ever win the Pac-10 title. She went on to place seventh at the NCAA Championships. Her incredible burst on to the cross country circuit left little doubt, as she was honored as the Pac-10 Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year and the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, the first runner to sweep the two awards.

ARIZONA STATE's Walt Drenth was named Pac-10 Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. In just his fourth season at the helm of the Sun Devil cross country program, he guided the ASU women to their best-ever effort at the Pac-10 Championships with a second-place finish, as well as NCAA Championships, finishing 12th.
