Women's Golf Takes 13th at Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Oct. 11, 2000

SEATTLE, Wash. - - The Oregon State women's golf team finished the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in 13th place with a score of 975 on the par 72, 5,953-yard Sahalee Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Though OSU was long and straight off the tee, the Beavers battled their short game for much of the tournament.

'They were struggling with their short game,' OSU head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'They had a bit of trouble with their long irons, but for the most part, the problem was course management as well as putting and chipping, the most important parts of the game. They hit the ball well off the tee.'

Leading the way for Oregon State was senior Carina Olsson, who finished tied for 40th after recording a 238. Freshman Marylyn Brand and sophomore Stacie Ferguson both carded scores of 245 to tie for 58th.

Melanie Furuta shot 253, including a final-round 79, and Kelly Ferris posted a 256 to round out the scoring for the Beavers, who totaled 325 in the final round.

'We're just not having those rounds with 28-30 putts,' Lakowske explained. 'We've been up in the 32-33 range, and that's a problem regardless of how many greens we hit.'

OSU has nine days to prepare for the Stanford Pepsi Invitational, where the Beavers will look to tame a course with which they are much more familiar.

'We'll just work toward Stanford and try to make improvements,' Lakowske said. 'We didn't have a lot of experience on Sahalee, and it's a course where experience pays off. We played Stanford's course last year, so we should be more familiar with it.'

Southern California captured the team title with a score of 896, running away from second-place Stanford, who shot a 908. Arizona State, Pepperdine, and UCLA rounded out the top five.

Stanford's Stephanie Keever took home individual medalist honors when she beat Stacy Prammanasudh in a playoff. Both golfers shot an even par 216 for the tournament.
