No. 4 Men's Soccer Defeats Santa Clara 2-0

Oct. 12, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford's Roger Levesque and Ryan Nelsen each scored goals as the fourth-ranked Cardinal men's soccer team captured a 2-0 victory over visiting Santa Clara tonight at New Maloney Field.

Stanford improves to 10-1-1 with the win while Santa Clara drops to 5-6-0. The Cardinal now has reached double-digit victories in each of head coach Bobby Clark's first five years on The Farm.

The Cardinal offense, second in the nation with an average of 3.64 goals per game, did not get off a shot until the 27:12 mark of the first half, however, Stanford made its third shot count. Senior midfielder Scott Leber played a beautiful cross to Levesque, who placed a header to the lower left corner for a 1-0 Stanford advantage at 33:51.

Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 at the 53:51 mark. Matt Moses started the sequence with a corner kick to Aaron Biddle, who sent a pass across the field to Nelsen. The senior midfielder took one touch before drilling a low shot past Bronco goalkeeper Rusty Johnson to the near post.

Santa Clara had the game's first scoring chance just 15 minutes into the game, however, Tony Cota's hard shot from 20 yards out hit the crossbar. Both teams narrowly missed goals in the last minute of the first half, as Stanford goalkeeper Adam Zapala made a diving save of Jeff Stewart's header before Cardinal forward Corey Woolfolk hit the crossbar with 10 seconds remaining.

Zapala finished with three saves as Stanford registered its tenth shutout in 12 games. Johnson recorded four saves for the Broncos.

Stanford is next in action on Sunday, October 15, when it returns to Pacific-10 Conference play against California. Kickoff from New Maloney Field is set for 2:00 p.m.
