Volleyball Toes The Line with No. 1 USC, But Falls Short 3-1

Oct. 12, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 1 ranked USC Trojans came into Wells Fargo Arena on the ASU campus having only dropped only one game in 13 matches this year, and they lost their second just 30 minutes into their match with the Arizona State Sun Devils.

The Women of Troy, however, who are ranked No. 1 by Volleyball Magazine and No. 4 by the AVCA, overcame the first game setback by taking the next three and maintaining their perfect 14-0 record and 8-0 mark in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils are now 12-6 on the season and 4-4 in the Pac-10. Consecutive loses to Oregon State and now USC marks the first time in 2000 the Sun Devils have dropped consecutive matches.

ASU senior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge (Scottsdale) led all players with 26 kills and added 15 digs, two service aces and two solo blocks to the cause. Burbridge has now recorded double-digit kills in each of her 16 matches played in 2000 and has now tallied over 20 kills 10 times. With 1,328 career kills, the senior is now just 64 kills short of fourth place in the ASU record books.

Senior middle blocker Michelle Mortensen (Chandler) had a great match, tying a career high with 22 kills and hit .436 (22-5-39) against the Women of Troy. Junior Jami Coughlin (Glendale) and sophomore Julia Leddy (Mesa) both added 14 kills for the Devils. Freshman setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek) recorded 65 assists, marking the fifth time this season she has surpassed the 60-assist plateau. The 65 assists rank as the 18th best performance in single-game ASU history. Anglin, who is only in her freshman campaign, now ranks fourth (77), ninth (71) and 18th on the list.

Five Trojans, led by April Ross' 17, recorded double-digit kills. Antoinette Polk added a match-high 22 digs. When the Trojans lost the opening game, it was only the second time this season they lost a game to an opponent. UCLA, who the Sun Devils battle tomorrow night, recorded the first and only game win last week in Los Angeles. USC is off to their best start in school history.

The Sun Devils host the Bruins at Wells Fargo Arena Friday evening with first serve at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net (local channel 34).
