Women's Basketball Releases 2000-2001 Schedule

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University women's basketball team, which was picked to finish first in the annual Pacific-10 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, has released its 2000-01 regular season and television schedules today.

The Cardinal opens practice this Saturday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Maples Pavilion, and on weekdays from 12:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Practices are not open to the public, but are open to all members of the media.

Tara VanDerveer's squad, which returns eight letter-winners and four starters from last season's 21-9 squad, will play over half of its games - 17 of 28 - against teams that qualified for the postseason last year. Eleven of those contests are against NCAA Tournament qualifiers, including road games against national powers Tennessee (Dec. 17) and Purdue (Dec. 19).and five of its first six to start the season. The Cardinal opens its 2000-01 home schedule, and a five-game, 14-day homestand, on Monday, November 20 against Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. Other home highlights include matchups against Bay Area rival California (Feb. 16 @ 7:30) and 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament qualifiers St. Joseph's (Nov. 24 @ 7:30), Utah (Dec. 30 @ 2:00), Arizona (Jan. 6 @ 7:30), Oregon (Feb. 8 @ 7:30) and UCLA (Mar. 3 @ 7:30).

Stanford will also have nine games televised by the Fox Sports Network - Nov. 17 at Saint Mary's (Bay Area only), Nov. 20 vs. Santa Clara (Bay Area), Dec. 3 vs. Massachusetts (national), Dec. 19 at Tennessee (Fox Sports South & Bay Area), Jan. 20 at California (national), Feb. 2 at UCLA (Bay Area), Feb. 4 at USC (national), Feb. 24 at Washington (national) and Mar. 3 vs. UCLA (Bay Area).

The Cardinal will be led by 1999-2000 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Jamie Carey, who set the school single season record for 3-pointers in a season (81) a year ago. Stanford also returns two Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 selections a year ago in senior Carolyn Moos and junior Lauren St. Clair.
