PALO ALTO, Calif. -- In the northwest corner of Laird Q. Cagan Stadium, a loud rumbling erupted as scores of hulking young men hummed The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.”

Those guys? Members of the Stanford football team, who were on hand to witness the first ever live event broadcast on Pac-12 Networks. The group created a boisterous atmosphere for their close friends on the women’s soccer team as seen here:

“All the teams here come and support us. We go support all the other teams," Cardinal football head coach David Shaw said. "There’s a community here that’s about excellence.”

The women's soccer side appreciated the support in a 6-1 victory over Santa Clara.

“We love the football team,” said senior midfielder Mariah Nogueira, who scored the game-tying goal early in the second half. “We’re great friends with them. They’re a rowdy bunch, and they get everyone going.”

The two programs share the same training room and have developed a close bond that involves a little teasing.

“We kind of have this camaraderie with them,” said Natalie Griffen, who scored two goals of her own. “We make fun of them for dirtying up our ice bath.”

This friendship has led to an annual soccer game between the two teams during the spring. The game’s biggest proponent just happened to be the No. 1 pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

“Andrew Luck was so into it,” Griffen said. “He was like, ‘We have to beat the girls.’”

Nogueira admitted that the football players are faster, but says that her girls are more skilled on the pitch. Paul Ratcliffe’s bunch usually wins, but last year, the football squad beat the defending NCAA champions.

“Yeah, they came out on top,” Nogueira said, after a little prying. “Those games are great; they’re always fun.”
