There’s a new top dog for the Pac-12 in the AP rankings. Thanks to USC’s loss to Stanford, Oregon moved up one spot to No. 3 in the AP Top 25. The Ducks handled business the way they should against FCS Tennessee Tech, beating the Golden Eagles 63-14 behind Marcus Mariota’s four touchdown passes and De’Anthony Thomas’ 135 yards of total offense (62 rushing, 73 receiving). Things will get considerably tougher for Oregon next weekend with Arizona coming to Autzen.

No. 9 Stanford made the biggest splash of anybody in the poll. By beating USC for the fourth consecutive year, the Cardinal jumped 12 spots to its current position. No Luck needed this time, not when Stanford’s front seven produced four sacks of Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley and its secondary picked off the Trojan signal-caller twice. The offense did its job, too, with Stepfan Taylor reaching paydirt a couple of times and Josh Nunes rebounding from a poor first half to throw two touchdown passes in the second, including the game-winner to Zach Ertz in the fourth quarter. The Cardinal get a chance to lick their wounds a little bit before their first road game on Sept. 27 in Seattle against the Huskies.

Meanwhile, the Trojans fell to No. 13 with the loss. Silas Redd rushed for two touchdowns, but that was about it for the USC attack. Both Marqise Lee and Robert Woods were kept out of the end zone and Matt Barkley failed to throw a touchdown pass, though his 48-yarder to Nelson Agholor put the Trojans on the goal line to set up their first score of the game. USC will have a chance to get back on track with a home tilt against Cal next Saturday.

No. 19 UCLA got revenge against Houston in 37-6 fashion and moved up three spots as a result. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley impressed again with 320 yards passing and two touchdowns. I guess Johnathan Franklin won’t rush for 200-plus every week, but his 110-yard effort against the Cougars kept the chains moving. A tough test looms for the Bruins next weekend as well-rested Oregon State marches into the Rose Bowl for the first conference match-up for both teams.

Rich Rodriguez said his Wildcats wouldn’t take South Carolina State lightly; he wasn’t kidding. Arizona throttled its FCS opponent 56-0 in Tucson and moved up two spots to No. 22. Outside of Matt Scott’s completion rate (30-36), no individual stats were really eye-popping. As a team, however, the Wildcats racked up 689 yards of total offense and held the Bulldog attack to just 154 yards. The Wildcats’ upcoming battle with No. 3 Oregon will be the second contest between ranked Pac-12 teams in as many weeks.
