The first BCS standings were released Sunday night and the biggest surprise came right near the top, where Oregon finds itself at No. 3 despite having been ranked No. 2 in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today Poll the last four weeks. Still plenty of time for the Ducks to surpass No. 2 Florida or No. 1 Alabama, and only one of those two SEC teams can enter the bowl season undefeated. Oregon also has to do its part, and it starts with a tough Thursday night game in Tempe against Todd Graham’s Arizona State Sun Devils.

No Mannion? No problem for Oregon State, which checks in at No. 8 after beating BYU 42-24 in Provo. Cody Vaz quelled a lot of Beavers fans’ worries with his 332-yard, three-touchdown, no-interception performance. This is the highest spot for the Beavers in the BCS since 2000. USC gives the Pac-12 its third and final team in the BCS top 10 at No. 10 after beating Washington 24-14 in Seattle. With Oregon and No. 5 Notre Dame still on the schedule, the Trojans have a chance to make a serious jump in the BCS standings and be in the national title game conversation.

After a heartbreaking loss in South Bend, Stanford is No. 20 and the last of four teams from the Pac-12 to make the top 25. If it’s any consolation for Stanford fans, the Cardinal are the highest-ranked two-loss team in the BCS and one of only three two-loss teams. While it is a very far cry to No. 2 for the Cardinal, a two-loss team has made the national championship game before (and won it- LSU in 2008).
