Westhead's request: play in Spain

The Oregon Ducks women's basketball team took a trip to Spain for more than a week in late August and early September and went a perfect 4-0 with only eight players. It should come as no surprise then that the "Guru of Go" Paul Westhead has a special ask of the Pac-12 while he is up here in San Francisco.

"I request that we play all of our Pac-12 games in Spain, and I think we’d be a terrific team," Westhead said.

The trip was especially important for the Ducks as they got extra time to gel on the court. After losing five of the team's top scorers from last season, Westhead stressed to his players that there are no individual stars on the team, but that they need to be a "five-pronged star team" where everybody is ready to contribute on the court. The trip to Spain showed just that, where all five of the starters averaged at least 17 points per game.

"I saw that they spread things around and that there’s no individual great player," Westhead said. "I think it was a great experience for our players and our staff".
