CORVALLIS, Ore. – After opening the season in Japan, the Oregon State women’s golf team is back in the states and returns to the links Friday and Saturday when they compete at the 34th Annual Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
COURSE: The tournament will be held at the Championship Golf Course at the University of New Mexico.
FORMAT: Two-day, 54-hole tournament with 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday. The top-four individuals from each five-member team with the lowest scores for each 18-hole round constitute the scoring members for that given round.
TEE TIMES: The long 36-hole opening day begins at 8 a.m. MT (7 a.m. PT) with a shotgun start, and the final round will have tee times off the first and 10th holes beginning at 8 a.m. MT (7 a.m. PT). The Beavers will be paired with Fresno State and San Diego State on Friday.
FIELD (16): Oregon State, Colorado, Fresno State, Iowa, Iowa State, Nevada, New Mexico, Northwestern, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Diego State, Texas Tech, UC Davis, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.
BEAVERS’ LINEUP: Head coach Risë Alexander and assistant coach Kailin Downs will go with a lineup of seniors Lauren Sewell and Seshia Telles, junior Anica Yoo and sophomores Ashlee Pickerell and Chelsea Saelee, the same five that played the Topy Cup. Freshman Krissy Peterson will make her Oregon State debut as an individual.
HOMECOMING: Oregon State assistant coach Kailin Downs will be making a homecoming of sorts, as she starred for the University of New Mexico from 2002-05. She was a two-time All-American, two-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and a four-time All-Mountain West Conference selection with the Lobos. She also won the individual title at the Dick McGuire Invitational her junior season.
LAST TIME OUT: The Oregon State women’s golf opened its 2013-14 campaign with a respectable second-place finish at the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan behind a career-best 1-over 217 by Yoo. The Beavers finished the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 26-over 292-295-303--890 to finish second behind Pac-12 rival Washington and ahead of the three Japanese teams that competed.
Yoo led Oregon State with a sixth-place finish, posting a solid 1-over 72-72-73--217 at the par-72, 6,087-yard Tanagura Country Club, while Telles bounced back after a tough opening round to finish 10th with a 4-over 77-70-73--220. Yoo’s 1-over 217 is her best career score in a three-round tournament, bettering the 3-over 219 she shot at the Oregon State Invitational last fall. It’s also the first top-10 finish of her career.
Pickerell parlayed a career-best 1-under 71 in the opening round into a 16th-place finish with a 13-over 71-77-81--229, while Saelee finished in a tie for 17th with a 14-over 76-76-78--230 and Sewell was tied for 20th with a 16-over 73-80-79--232.
