ERIE, Colo. - At the end of a windy day of play at the Colorado National Golf Club, the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational was delayed as darkness fell over the course. The Washington State University men's golf team sits in second place with 34 of the tournament’s 84 players still needing to finish the second round.
The Cougars are a handful of strokes behind host school Colorado with junior Michael Anderson, junior Charlie Mroz, and senior Blake Snyder all shooting under par in the second round.
“Overall it was a good day,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “We had some moments where we were awesome and we had some moments where we struggled. Most of it had to do with the weather and the wind. We did a really good job. Overall we hit quality shots, and we’re in good shape. Blake and Michael are playing great golf. Charlie had a shaky start, but recovered well. Now we have to go out and put some pressure on Colorado. It’s tough to beat a team on their home course.”
Led by Snyder and Anderson, the Cougars notched a first-round score of 308 (+20). Both carded scores of 76 (+4) through 18 holes, sitting in a tie for 17th place. Redshirt junior Sang Lee and Mroz each shot 6-over par (78) in the first round, tying for 36th place. Sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon finished the round tied for 70th (+11, 83).
Each Cougar golfer has one hole remaining to play in the second round and will begin play at 8 a.m. MDT / 7 a.m. PDT Tuesday. Beginning at 8:45 a.m. MDT / 7:45 a.m. PDT the third round will begin and play in shotgun format.
Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com for the tournament's duration. Full tournament results and recap will be available at the conclusion of the tournament at wsucougars.com.
