ERIE, Colo. – As the weather got better so did the scores for the Oregon State men’s golf team, as the Beavers knocked 17 strokes off their afternoon round on Monday’s 36-hole day to sit in second place at the 15-team Mark Simpson Invitational.
Play was halted due to darkness with 34 of the 84 players still needing to finish the second round.
Oregon State opened the two-day, 54-hole event with a 19-over 306-289--595 at the par-72, 7,741-yard Colorado National Golf Club and are six strokes back of host Colorado, which fired a 13-over 299-290--589. Washington State is a stroke behind the Beavers but all five of their players were unable to finish.

The morning round was played in terrible weather conditions with winds blowing nearly 25 mph on a very wet golf course. Only one player -- Preston Stanley of Houston Baptist -- reached red figures in the first round, while 10 of the 50 golfers who finished shot sub-par rounds in the afternoon.

Two of those with under-par rounds after the lunch break were Beavers, as senior David Fink fired a 2-under 70 and true freshman Kevin Murphy carded a 1-under 71. Junior Scott Kim shot a 1-over 73, while junior transfer Alex Franklin and sophomore Brian Jung each added a 3-over 75.
Murphy sits in a tie for fifth through 36 holes with a 2-over 75-71--146, and Fink’s hot second round moved him 25 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for ninth with a 4-over 78-70--148. Franklin was the only Oregon State golfer to go backwards after the second round, albeit just a stroke, and is tied for 15th with a 5-over 74-75--149.
Kim knocked six strokes off his afternoon round, finishing the long day with an 8-over 79-73--152 to put him in a tie for 26th. Despite finishing second at this event last year in his college debut, Jung had a tough first round with a 12-over 84. He made the biggest improvement, however, of anyone on the Beavers by posting a 3-over 75 and is tied for 70th with a 15-over 159.
The 34 players still on the golf course when play was halted will finish their second round at 8 a.m. MT (7 a.m. PT) on Tuesday. The final round for all teams will move to a shotgun start beginning at 8:45 a.m. MT (7:45 a.m. PT).
