ERIN, Wis. – The Oregon State men’s golf team had four players around even par in the first round of the three-day, 54-hole Erin Hills Intercollegiate on Sunday to put the Beavers in a tie for fourth place in the 14-team field.
Senior David Fink, junior Alex Franklin and sophomore Brian Jung all fired an even-par 72, and freshman Kevin Murphy added a 1-over 73 at the par-72, 7,234-yard Erin Hills Golf Course to give the Beavers a 1-over 289.
Stanford jumped out to a commanding lead after carding an 8-over 280, while UCLA and SMU are tied for second with a 2-under 286. Michigan and Northwestern are tied for fourth with Oregon State, and Oklahoma and host Marquette are a stroke back with a 2-over 290.

Oregon State golfers got off to a slow start with no one in red figures when they made the turn. Part of that was the tough golf course, which will host the 2017 U.S. Open, and part was the fact they didn’t get a full practice round in on Saturday due to inclement weather.
Fink started his round with a birdie but took four consecutive bogeys between the fifth through eighth holes to put him at 3 over. He settled down with six straight pars and then birdied three of the last four holes, including one on the par-5 18th, for his even-par round.
Franklin had a cleaner scorecard with eight pars and a bogey on the front, before getting to 1 under with birdies on the par-4 11th and par-5 14th holes. He took a bogey on the par-4 17th to finish with a 72. Jung was 2 over going out but had three birdies and a bogey coming in to also open with an even-par score.
Murphy reeled off 11 straight pars to start the day before carding a birdie on the par-4 12th. After a bogey on the 13th, he got another birdie to get back to red numbers but bogeyed the 16th and 18th holes for a 1-over 73.
