Signing Day 2014: Depth charts a hot topic for most recruits

"This all sounds great, coach, but can you tell me if I'm going to start as a freshman?"

If Yogi Roth and Rick Neuheisel – or any other college football coach – had a nickel for every time they heard that from a recruit, they could probably retire to a sunny island.

Thousands of college football players across the NCAA have the belief that they could start for their program. Of course, there are only about two dozen starting spots on every team. While coaches want to assure eager 17 and 18-year-olds that their talents will be taken to the next level at their school, they're typically careful to never promise immediate playing time.

Instead, both Rick and Yogi say that they let each recruit know that they will be brought in and allowed to compete at the highest level for a coveted starting spot with the other great athletes that are already in the system and on campus.

In this edition of Land the Recruit, our coaches talk to our five-star quarterback, Mike Yam, about his chances of making an immediate impact at either Venice University or Manhattan Beach University. He'll reveal his decision in conjunction with the Pac-12 Football Weekly: Signing Day Special, which airs on Feb. 5 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
