Arizona State

How ‘bout dem Sun Devils? Arizona State upset then-No. 15 Michigan State 16-13 Saturday night in Tempe, moved into the AP Top 25 at No. 23 and had freshman linebacker Merlin Robertson named Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week. Robertson compiled nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and one pass breakup in the win over the Spartans.

California

Impressive win for the Golden Bears in Provo, taking down BYU 21-18, and Rusty Simmons writes that Cal seems to have settled on a two-quarterback system with Chase Garbers and Brandon McIlwain, with Garbers the bigger passing threat and McIlwain the bigger threat on his feet. Both played well in the second half of the win over BYU.

Stanford

Tom FitzGerald writes that Stanford’s defense shut down USC in its 17-3 win over the Trojans Saturday night. It was the fewest points USC had scored against Stanford since getting shut out by the Cardinal in 1941.

Colorado

Brian Howell notes that Colorado showed team camaraderie in the big 33-28 win at Nebraska Saturday afternoon. Laviska Shenault Jr. for Heisman?

Oregon

Oregon learned a little more about how good it can be this year in the 62-14 win over Portland State, jots Andrew Greif. It appears the defense is much improved, but the Ducks haven’t played anybody of consequence yet (you can thank Texas A&M for that; the Stanford game in two weeks will be juicy though).

Oregon State

Ken Goe believes that Oregon State looks like it can win in the Pac-12 following its 48-25 drubbing of Southern Utah. Congrats to Jonathan Smith on getting his first win as head coach.

Utah

Utah improved to 2-0 with a 17-6 win over Northern Illinois, and as the final score might indicate (especially with one touchdown coming on defense), the Utes need to improve offensively, Kurt Kragthorpe notes.

Washington

Adam Jude writes that while Washington’s next game at Utah should be a “premier Pac-12 matchup,” neither the Huskies nor the Utes have been playing very well. True, the Huskies routed North Dakota 45-3 on Saturday, but it was just a two-touchdown game in the second half.

Washington State

Washington State football coach Mike Leach was not pleased with the Cougars’ toughness on offense following the team’s 31-0 win over San Jose State. Theo Lawson has more details in the link.

UCLA

Thuc Nhi Nguyen reviews UCLA’s 49-21 loss to Oklahoma. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson looks like the he can be the real deal, the Bruins took an early lead and Russell Westbrook showed up to the game, so there were certainly some positives.

USC

Check out this video feature on USC cornerback Ajene Harris that will be on the debut of “Our Stories” on September 30 at 7:15 p.m. PT/8:15 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Now. Really good story here, chronicling Harris’ journey to USC, switching from receiver to cornerback, getting his degree from USC and so on.

Arizona

Super rough weekend in Houston for Arizona football, but Arizona women’s soccer defeated Baylor 3-1 Sunday in Tucson, so you can watch the Pac-12 Networks recap in the preceding link if you want more positive Arizona athletics news.
