USC

Former USC quarterback Sam Darnold led the New York Jets to a 48-17 win over the Detroit Lions in his first career NFL start, overcoming a pick-six on his first pass to complete 16 of his 21 pass attempts for 198 yards, two touchdowns and that one interception (ESPN). He joins Brett Favre and Jameis Winston as the only QBs to throw a pick-six on their first career attempts in the last 27 years and becomes the first QB to win by at least 31 points in his first career start since Tom Brady in 2001.

Colorado

Brian Howell reports that no Colorado football players will be suspended following the play that resulted in an injury to Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez. The freshman quarterback for the Huskers hurt his right knee while being tackled by Colorado linebacker Jacob Callier, getting his leg caught underneath him while also being hit by Nate Landman and Israel Antwine. Nebraska head coach Scott Frost turned the play into the Big Ten and Pac-12 for review.

Arizona State

Former Arizona State offensive lineman Randall McDaniel will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame at the Rose Bowl Kickoff Luncheon on New Year’s Eve, it was announced Monday. Joining McDaniel in the Class of 2018 are Pop Warner, Vince Young and George Halas.

Utah

Utah linebacker Chase Hansen was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after amassing 12 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery in the 17-6 win over Northern Illionis. Colorado WR Laviska Shenault Jr. was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Arizona State K Brandon Ruiz was named Special Teams Player of the Week in the Pac-12.

Oregon State

Nick Daschel reports that Oregon State running back Artavis Pierce will be out for a month with an elbow injury. He was off to a great start in 2018, rushing for 168 yards against Ohio State and 95 on 11 carries against Southern Utah before getting hurt in the second quarter.

Washington

Through a public records request, Jon Wilner is able to tell us that an ESPN executive e-mailed Washington AD Jen Cohen regarding ESPN broadcaster Mark Jones’ tweet about the Huskies after their loss to Auburn, calling it “childish behavior that is unacceptable” and going on to assure Cohen that Jones will not call any Washington games for an indeterminable period of time.

Arizona

Greg Hansen of the Arizona Daily Star opines that Arizona’s season “could get derailed” if Khalil Tate isn’t completely healthy. The Arizona quarterback tweaked his left ankle in the loss at Houston.

UCLA

Yes, the Bruins lost by four touchdowns at Oklahoma, but UCLA was able to hold the Sooners without a 100-yard rusher, something the Bruins haven’t accomplished since November 2016. Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times has more in the link.

Oregon

Check out John Canzano’s interview with former Oregon quarterback Akili Smith as the two discuss what advice Smith would give current Oregon starting quarterback Justin Herbert (Smith thinks staying in school would be the way to go).

Washington State

With the Cougs getting ready to host Eastern Washington this weekend, Theo Lawson lets us know that Mike Leach is interested in the story behind Eastern Washington’s red turf but prefers playing on a green field (and a grass field at that).

Stanford

Former Stanford women’s water polo great Maggie Steffens was named FINA World Cup MVP after leading USA to its third straight World Cup title by defeating Russia 8-5 in the finals on Sunday.

California

We’ll end the roundup with a video feature on 9/11 hero Mark Bingham, a two-time national champion on the Cal rugby team who gave his life trying to retake United Airlines Flight 93 from hijackers who had planned to fly it to Washington D.C.
