Roundup: ASU men win in double overtime, Sabrina Ionescu gets triple-double

Arizona State

College hoops season is here, and it was a thrilling night at Wells Fargo Arena, as Arizona State men’s basketball outlasted Cal State Fullerton in double overtime thanks to 28 points from true freshman Luguentz Dort (The Arizona Republic).

Oregon

You might be wondering why third-ranked Oregon women’s basketball played a road game in Alaska (Ruthy Hebard homecoming game), but Sabrina Ionescu had a triple-double and Ruthy Hebard scored 15 points despite feeling sick to lead the Ducks to a 115-36 romp over the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks. Oregon also got 23 from sophomore star Satou Sabally (she’s the real deal).

USC

We can’t get to every score from Pac-12 hoops action last night, but we can tell you that USC men’s basketball used a second-half run to push past Robert Morris in an 83-62 victory (AP recap). The Trojans were trailing by four points with a little more than 12 minutes remaining before an 18-4 run gave them control of the game.

Stanford

Check out the Pac-12 Networks recap of Stanford men’s basketball’s 96-74 win over Seattle Tuesday night, as the Cardinal got a career-high 29 points from KZ Okpala and 16 from sharp-shooting freshman Cormac Ryan.

California

It was a lot closer than the Golden Bears probably hoped, but Cal women’s basketball survived Houston 80-79 Tuesday night at Haas Pavilion in large thanks due to Kristine Anigwe’s 37 points and 13 rebounds (San Francisco Chronicle). That’s some line right there.

Oregon State

Nick Daschel writes that Oregon State men’s basketball got through some rough patches to defeat UC Riverside 72-59 in its season opener Tuesday night.

Washington

Percy Allen gives us his three takeaways from Washington men’s basketball’s 73-55 win over Western Kentucky Tuesday night in Seattle. Noah Dickerson led the way with 18 points, scoring 16 of those in the second half to help the Dawgs erase a 36-27 halftime deficit.

Washington State

Washington State remained at No. 8 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings after narrowly defeating Cal in Pullman Saturday, while Washington hopped into the rankings at No. 25. Sarah Kezele breaks down the scene for us.

UCLA

Former UCLA men’s basketball commit LaMelo Ball is returning to play high school basketball in America, his father, LaVar Ball, announced Tuesday (CBS Sports). He will be playing his senior year at Spire Prep Academy in Ohio and will be eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft. Meanwhile, LiAngelo Ball is planning to sign a G League contract and enter the available player pool, Shams Charania reports (Yahoo on the link, which notes that he hadn’t signed the contract as of link-publishing time).

Colorado

Here's an Associated Press story on Colorado men’s basketball forward Evan Battey returning to the court nearly a year after suffering a stroke. Great story here, and we documented it at Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Media Day as well. The Buffs open their season Nov. 13 against Drake.

Arizona

Arizona men’s basketball gets its season started Wednesday night (6 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network), so Bruce Pascoe gives us this Arizona-Houston Baptist scouting report. The Huskies were one of the worst teams in the nation last year, finishing with an RPI of 346 (out of 351 Division I teams).

Utah

Kurt Kragthorpe features Utah redshirt freshman quarterback Jason Shelley, who will make his first career start Saturday against Oregon as he fills in for the injured Tyler Huntley.
